Jennie Heslop, founder
What inspired you to create art-act-amplify.org? I’m a creative at heart, born to a singer and a dancer/nurse/saleswoman, lived in multiple countries, been a singer, poet, writer, stage manager, radio producer, TV production manager, live performance art producer, and creative director:)
Art serves as a reflection of the present and a bridge to the past, acting as historical markers. Its destruction during times of war and conflict underscores its power to shape societal narratives. I founded this platform because I believe art is crucial for historical accuracy, cultural preservation, and nurturing empathy.
How do you choose which artists and projects to amplify through art-act-amplify.org? We prioritize artists from the African Diaspora whose works address social injustices, inequities, and cultural diversity. Their art educates, informs, and calls for action, making them the voices we aim to amplify.
How does cultural preservation tie into the mission of art-act-amplify.org, and why is it crucial to the organization’s work? Preserving cultural legacies is vital, as they represent resilience and the shared experiences that shape our identities.
What impact do you hope art-act-amplify.org will have on the communities it serves and on society at large? I envision art-act-amplify.org as a global hub for artists to share their passion for social justice. I want it to be a platform where people can learn about shared issues and access resources for creating meaningful change locally and globally.
What do you hope to achieve through art-act-amplify.org?
During COVID, I realized just how connected we are globally. The George Floyd protests revealed the ripple effect of collective action worldwide. Through art-act-amplify.org, I aim to foster empathy and inspire global action by highlighting that we often face similar injustices, with similiar strategies and impact on communities. What is unique about the way art-act-amplify.org approaches the intersection of art and activism compared to other similar organizations? We focus, first, on magnifying artists and their works to create opportunities for global engagement. This includes project funding, collaborations, partnerships, and sponsorships across all sectors designed to support the artists, their careers and their causes.
